While key retail districts across the city took an unprecedented hit as a result of the pandemic in 2020, during 2021 these corridors slowly came back to life. Our own SoHo Broadway District saw a steady increase in its retail occupancy levels. Retail occupancy in the SoHo Broadway district increased over the course of 2021, closing the year with a 74.1% retail occupancy rate, approaching pre-pandemic occupancy levels (80.5%). The District consequently saw a steady decrease in vacancy rates, starting 2021 with a 34.6% retail vacancy rate and ending the year with a 25.9% retail vacancy rate. The district also saw a number of store relocations, and fewer store closures compared to previous years. Most recently, Sundaysoho, MINISO, and Wilson have established a longer-term retail presence following prior successful pop-up locations in the District. Recently, SundaySoHo transitioned from its pop-up lodation to having a longer-term retail presence in the district. The store moved from their old location in 490 Broadway to 580 Broadway between Prince and Houston Streets. Sundays is an eco-conscious brand focused on creating sustainable apparel that are one-of-a-kind pieces. We’re excited to have shops like Sundays to continue to have a presence in our District, maintaining the unique retail character of the corridor.

Japanese lifestyle retailer MINISO relocated from its location on 579 Broadway to a larger retail space at 490 Broadway. After an initial soft opening, MINISO had its grand opening on Saturday, February 26 2022. MINISO’s new location will be replacing Sundaysoho (who moved to 580 Broadway) at the ornate and landmarked cast-iron Haughwout Building. We are excited for the continued presence of international retailers making a home in our district and catering to its diverse needs.
