Back in 2023, when trash containerization was fresh on the scene in New York City, the SoHo Broadway Initiative stepped up to participate in in the City’s Clean Curbs program, piloting new methods to get unsanitary bags trash off of our sidewalks.
Made possible with funding via a grant from the City and in partnership with the Departments of Sanitation, Transportation, and Small Business Services, the Initiative installed a pilot “Bin Box” that you may have seen on Prince Street between Broadway and Crosby Street. This custom, one-of-a-kind, securely locked prototype was designed by Re-Ply and featured a green roof planted and maintained by The Horticultural Society of New York under contract with the Initiative.
The Bin Box successfully served the district for 3 years and securely stored over 6,000 bags of public trash during that time which would have otherwise sat on the northeast and southeast corners of Prince Street and Broadway! As we have greatly expanded our program into full containerization of all public trash collected by our Clean Team, we wanted to acknowledge the pioneering role this initial Clean Curbs prototype served in showing how trash containerization can successfully operate in the district. The Bin Box importantly also served as a test-bed for adding a green roof to trash containers, which inspired the incoporation of this feature into our new Citibin system!
Now that full containerization has been implemented in the District, we look forward to seeing how this expanded array of bins can help us keep all of the SoHo Broadway corridor and side streets more sanitary, just as this forerunner did for two initial corners over the past 3 years. We are grateful to Re/Ply, our Clean Team, and our agency partners for making this significant pilot program possible. With that, we send a final salute to the Bin Box, which has been retired from service and will be removed from the District this month.
