As New York City works toward full trash containerization, the SoHo Broadway Initiative is doing our part! In June, our District welcomed an array of new bins (by Citibin) designed to keep all bags of trash collected by our Clean Team off of the sidewalk corners while they await collection by the Department of Sanitation, away from pedestrians and inaccessible to rats. The goal of the Initiative and City is to improve sanitary and aesthetic conditions for all of those who live in, work in, or walk the sidewalks of the District daily, in addition to alleviating the impacts on piles of bags on pedestrian congestion at the corners.
The new bins all feature an innovative green roof (SoHo Broadway was the launch customer for this model). New planters with ornamental shrubs and summer blooms have also been installed adjacent to the bins and in curb extensions, adding some much-needed green (with pops of color) to Broadway and our cross streets. The plantings were installed and are maintained by The Horticultural Society of New York under contract with the Initiative.
We are so appreciative of Citibin, The Hort, our Clean Team, and agency partners the New York City Department of Sanitation and Department of Transportation for making these new bins and planters a reality. We are so excited to start this new cleaner, greener chapter for our District!
