On September 6 and October 4, 2019, in collaboration with the New York City Department of Transportation’s Weekend Walks program, the SoHo Broadway Initiative transformed Howard Street between Mercer Street and Crosby Street into a pedestrian-only space.
In addition to offering car-free public space and outdoor seating, First Fridays also featured cornhole and giant games, drawing activities and materials provided by The Uni Project’s DRAW NYC program (in collaboration with SoHo’s The Drawing Center), and al fresco dining courtesy of La Mercerie Cafe at The Guild.
Hundreds of people enjoyed these blocks over the course of the two dates, and we received overwhelmingly positive feedback about the events from residents, businesses, workers, property owners, and visitors. The Initiative looks forward to again partnering with the Department of Transportation and the SoHo Broadway community in the 2020 Weekend Walks program.
