The City of New York sends four million tons of trash to landfills every year; almost a third of it being food waste. On June 1st, a NY Compost Box landed on Broadway at Spring Street to pilot a composting program for the SoHo Broadway community. The NY Compost Box Project repurposes decommissioned newspaper boxes into receptacles for compostable materials, offering New Yorkers a convenient way to divert food waste from landfills.
Since its launch in June, the SoHo Broadway NY Compost Box has collected over 250 gallons of compost from a small group of committed composters.
The NY Compost Box program on Broadway is a working operation brought together by Common Ground Compost and Reclaimed Organics. Reclaimed Organics is a micro-hauler based out of the Lower East side and uses bikes to pick up the compost from the drop off site at Broadway and Spring multiple times a week.
As the pilot composting program has proven successful, the Initiative is making the program permanent and expanding the program for residents in the district.
