As previously reported, the NYC Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is proposing a comprehensive redesign of Canal Street in Manhattan. The redesign aims to make the corridor safer for all road users by enhancing pedestrian safety, expanding the bicycle network, creating open space, and calming traffic.
Following extensive community feedback received in response to its initial proposal published in 2025, DOT announced that it has divided the project into two phases. Phase 1 comprises Canal Street (west of Broadway) and Grand Street. In late July, DOT published an updated proposal for Phase 1 which was also presented to Community Boards 1 and 2. Read the Phase 1 proposal here.
