SoHo Broadway Partner: Attend a Community Council or Build the Block meeting to learn more about local issues and share your concerns

Broadway between Houston Street and Canal Street serves as the boundary between the 1st Precinct (West of Broadway) and the 5th Precinct (East of Broadway) of the New York Police Department. Both precincts hold Community Council meetings with precinct commanders and Build the Block meetings with neighborhood coordination officers assigned to distinct sectors within the precincts.

Community Council Meetings

In the 1940s, local precincts and the communities they serve began collaborating to bring officers together with local residents and business people to work cooperatively on public safety issues using local resources, talents and ideas. This is the foundation of Precinct Community Councils. Today, Community Council meetings with local police commanders act as the precinct community forum on police-related matters and open a two-way communication link between police commanders and officers and community.

Neighborhood Policing

In recent years, Neighborhood Policing has transformed into new patrol paradigm that includes sectors of precincts–dividing precincts into four or five fully-staffed sectors. This model of staffing revolves around Neighborhood Coordination Officers (NCOs), who are assigned to and remain in a sector, or neighborhood, for the duration of their tour. The officers have off-radio time so that they are not exclusively assigned to answering calls for service and can engage with neighborhood residents and businesses.

Below, you can find information about locations of the precincts serving our district, the Commanding Officers and names of community members serving on the Community Councils.
