In March, Bobby Canty joined the Initiative’s Clean Team. The Clean Team is made up of 6 team members and several supervisors who work for ACE, our Clean Team partner. Most readers recognize our Clean Team from their distinctive sapphire blue SoHo Broadway t-shirts. The Initiative is excited to have Bobby join the Clean Team and to introduce him to the SoHo Broadway community.
Bobby Canty was born in Manhattan, attended Lehman H.S. and currently lives in Coop City with his father. In March, Bobby graduated from ACE’s Project Comeback. Project Comeback participants receive job-readiness training, supported work experience (providing maintenance services to New York City streets and parks), adult basic education, supplemental skills training (including Occupational Safety & Health Administration and Food Protection certifications) and vocational support services.
Bobby leaves his house by 5:30am to start his 7am shift and makes sure Broadway is clean and ready to go.
On May 2nd Bobby joined the Initiative’s Executive Director, Mark Dicus, for lunch.
5 Questions with Bobby Canty:
SBI: When did you start working/volunteering with the SoHo Broadway Initiative?
BC: I started on an interim basis in January 2016 and became a permanent member of the SoHo Broadway Clean Team at the end of March 2016.
SBI: Outside of work, what are your interests and activities?
BC: I like to stay in shape by working out at the gym, shoot pool and watch movies from time to time.
SBI: What is the best part of the next thing you’re doing?
BC: I like to stay active and I’m working on saving up for my own place. I always say to myself that things will get better.
SBI: What is your favorite hang-out spot in the SoHo/Downtown area?
BC: I like to exercise by the water in Hudson River Park or Battery Park City.
SBI: What is your preferred mode of transportation in NYC?
BC: When I was younger, I used to be a bike messenger. These days I like to take the bus.
