In New York City, the ongoing flood of unwelcome graffiti, stickers, posters, and fliers is a fact of life, but the SoHo Broadway Initiative does our best to tame the tide. The SoHo Broadway Clean Team scrapes stickers and posters on a daily basis and paints public assets every week in addition to power washing in the warmer months. In March 2025, the Clean Team corrected over 400 incidents of graffiti, stickers, and posters from lampposts, electrical boxes, fire hydrants, and other public property.
Take a look at some before-and-after examples in the slideshow below!:
In addition to the Clean Team’s impact on public assets, Initiative staff regularly survey graffiti visible on private property and notify property owners/managers, urging that the condition is properly and promptly addressed.
The City of New York also offers a free graffiti removal service through its Graffiti Free NYC program. In order to participate, property owners must submit this release form. However, the program often overwhelmed by demand, and graffiti removal can take months to be completed. As a result, we encourage property owners who are able to directly take proactive steps to remove graffiti themselves to ensure the work is done in a timely and effective manner.
We greatly appreciate property owners and property managers who properly maintain their buildings and remove graffiti as soon as it is identified. Together, we can keep the SoHo Broadway district looking its best!
