The 2022 Community Board application

By Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal

Ever heard the expression “think globally, act locally”?  Well, now’s your chance. Right now, Community Boards are accepting applications to fill over 300 open seats on Manhattan’s twelve community boards.

Community boards are the independent and representative voices of our local communities in Manhattan. As the most grassroots form of government, community boards are the starting point in enhancing and preserving the character of Manhattan’s many unique neighborhoods. Community board members play a vital role in local decision-making, weighing in on issues such as housing, landmarks, sanitation, transit, small businesses, open space, and more.

You must be at least 16 years old and live, work, or attend school in the community board to which you’re applying. Applications are now open through February 27. Decisions will be made by the beginning of April.  You can learn about the location and work of your community board and apply HERE

Our district is in Manhattan Community Board 2.

Community Board 2 is one of the first community boards to be established in the early 1960’s. There are 12 Community Boards in Manhattan and 59 across New York City that are charged with representing community interest on crucial issues of development and planning, land use, zoning and City service delivery, such as sanitation and street maintenance, as well as coordination with social services and public education facilities.

CB2’s district boundaries are the south side of 14th Street, the north side of Canal Street, the Hudson River and the west side of the Bowery/4th Avenue. CB2 encompass the neighborhoods of Greenwich Village, Little Italy, SoHo, NoHo, Hudson Square, Chinatown, and the Gansevoort Market. The district is defined by its history of political activism, its unique architectural landscapes, active artistic community, and by the cultural and ethnic diversity of its populations.
