By Artists and Fleas SoHo
Artists & Fleas is proud to present “Scorch,” an exhibition by artist David Friedman at the Artists & Fleas in Soho from 1/25 – 2/4/18, with an opening reception Thursday, 1/25 from 6-9pm. This is the first show of the ‘Scorch’ series and the inaugural exhibition at Artists & Fleas in the heart of Soho – great SoHo Broadway Event this winter.
Artists & Fleas in Soho is located in a landmark building at the corner of Broadway & Prince. This location has historically been home to many important galleries. Artists & Fleas is excited to continue this tradition by showcasing Friedman’s work.
In Friedman’s “Scorch” series, industrial materials, pigments and fire shape delicate and bold forms into cinematic, psychedelic dreamscapes. He layers washes of smoke on canvas, leather, paper and wood to scar, stain and stress the physical singularity of each object. He will often push a work to the brink of destruction by riddling it with holes or burning away at it so that its near obliteration is a partner in its making. Physicality has been a consistent theme in Friedman’s artistic practice. He has engaged traditional and nontraditional canvases, such as animal hides, paper towels, x-ray film, foam rubber and found books.
Friedman’s works have been shown in galleries and alternative spaces, including PS 122, the DUMBO Art Center, the NY Studio Gallery, Angel Orensanz Center, Dieu Donne and others. He has received multiple awards, including being nominated for a Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors Grant. He received his MFA from Brooklyn College and BA in Fine Arts from Brandeis University. Friedman currently lives on the Lower East Side, where his studio is at the Clemente Arts and Cultural Center.
