Join poets Lisa Marie Basile, Jianna Jihuyn Park, Ashley Chambers, Joanna C. Valente, and Maura Lee Bee for a memorial reading and celebration of Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s extraordinary life and work.
Theresa Hak Kyung Cha is the author of Dictee, a hybrid text of poetry, image, and history. She also created several conceptual video works such as Secret Spill, Re Dis Appearing, and Mouth to Mouth. Born in Pusan, South Korea, she immigrated with her parents to the Bay Area at the age of twelve. She studied at the University of California, Berkeley and the Centre d’Etudes Americaine du Cinema in Paris. Cha later moved to New York City with her husband and worked for the design department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and as an editor at Tanam Press. Her work has appeared at the Berkeley Art Museum, the Whitney Museum or Art, Artists Space, and elsewhere. Her family history informs much of her work, as well as her fluency in Korean, French, and English, as well as her analysis into language itself. Cha’s life tragically ended in 1982, when she was only 31 years old, in the Puck Building in Soho.
