To coincide with the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Anelise Chen (So Many Olympic Exertions), Rowan Ricardo Phillips (Heaven; The Ground), and Chloé Cooper Jones will discuss the intersections between literature and sports in sportswriting and fiction.

Anelise Chen is the author of So Many Olympic Exertions (Kaya Press 2017), an experimental novel that blends elements of sportswriting, memoir, and self help. She hails from Temple City, California, and received a BA in English from UC Berkeley and an MFA in Fiction from NYU. Her essays and reviews have appeared in the New York Times, NPR, BOMB Magazine, The New Republic, VICE, Village Voice, and many other publications. She has received fellowships from the Asian American Writers’ Workshop, the Wurlitzer Foundation, and she will be a 2019 Literature Fellow at the Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Germany. She currently teaches writing at Columbia University and writes a column on mollusks for The Paris Review.

Chloé Cooper Jones is a philosophy professor, writer, and journalist. Her work on sport, film, and more can be found in GQ, VICE, Electric Literature, and her fiction has appeared in The Black Warrior Review, West Branch, and elsewhere.

Rowan Ricardo Phillips is the award-winning author of The Ground and Heaven, the acclaimed collection of literary essays When Blackness Rhymes With Blackness and a translation, from the Catalan, of Ariadne in the Grotesque Labyrinth. Also a prodigious sportswriter, Rowan has written on soccer, basketball and tennis. Rowan has written extensively on basketball for both the New Yorker and the Paris Review Daily. A selection of his writing will be collected in a new volume on basketball by the Library of America.
