Join us offsite for some delicious history! Lower East Side Jewish stories often focus on Eastern European immigrants, but they weren’t the only Jews in town. Sephardic Jews from Spain and Portugal also set down roots in the neighborhood. How are these groups similar, and in what ways have they interpreted Jewish heritage and traditions differently? Culinary historian Sarah Lohman and educator Jessica Underwood Varma explore that question through everyone’s favorite cultural marker – food. Join us to learn about (and taste!) the culinary traditions of Sephardic Jewish immigrants of the Lower East Side. Presented in partnership with the Henry Street Settlement.
Sarah Lohman is a culinary historian and author of Eight Flavors: The Untold Story of American Cuisine. Jessica Underwood Varma is an Education Associate for Costumed Interpretation at the Tenement Museum.
Free. This program is made possible in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities. For reservations, visit www.henrystreet.org/
