Exhibition on view April 1–July 19, 2025
Reflecting on a quarter century of artistic achievement tied to the Anonymous Was A Woman (AWAW) award program, the exhibition showcases works by a selection of past awardees (1996–2020) and traces the development of contemporary art practice over the last twenty-five years, addressing issues of identity and community; the position of women artists in society; the shifting value of craft; the changing possibilities for installation and time-based media; as well as the many uses of anonymity.
Anonymous Was A Woman: The First 25 Years is organized by the Grey Art Museum, New York University, and curated by Nancy Princenthal and Vesela Sretenović. The exhibition is made possible in part by the generous support of the Grey’s Director’s Circle, Inter/National Council, and Friends; and the Abby Weed Grey Trust.
