In 2018, the SoHo Broadway Initiative launched a compost drop-off program for residents along SoHo Broadway via a New York Compost Box placed at Broadway and Spring Street, later expanded to a 2nd box at Broadway and Grand Street.
The Initiative’s compost program was a collaboration between Common Ground Compost and Reclaimed Organics to give residents in parts of the city that weren’t part of DSNY’s composting program an opportunity to compost and help the New York City reach its zero waste goals. The New York Compost Box Project repurposes decommissioned newspaper vending racks into receptacles for compostable materials, offering New Yorkers a convenient way to divert food waste from landfills.
Since our program’s inception, SoHo Broadway residents diverted nearly 3 tons of compostable material from landfills through the New York Compost Boxes! We thank all of the composters who participated, the many others who signed up on the very long wait list, and everyone in he community who supported this effort, which successfully demonstrated community demand for composting collection at a time the City was not yet offering these services.
Now that the Department of Sanitation’s mandatory residential curbside composting initiative has expanded to Manhattan, the Initiative has sunset our small-scale compost program. Read more about residential curbside composting here. As an alternative option, nearby Smart Compost Bins can be located here, with several sited within walking distance of SoHo Broadway. As always, happy composting!
