Over the past year the Initiative has observed the bike racks along Broadway as being at or near capacity, leaving commuters, residents, and visitors to lock their bikes to other objects or lean them against building facades. Instead of adding more bike racks to the sidewalk, the Initiative has been exploring other opportunities that may provide more parking, while improving pedestrian flow.
The New York City Department of Transportation has a bike corral program that provides bike parking in the curbside lane of the street for districts with narrow or congested sidewalks. The bike corral would take the place of one parking space, but provide parking for eight bicycles and add greenery to the streetscape with two potted planters.
Anyone can apply for a bicycle corral, but a maintenance partner must be identified. If anyone would like to apply, the SoHo Broadway Initiative will provide maintenance for the corrals and assist in the application process to the Department of Transportation.
