On May 27, 2020, the SoHo Broadway Initiative, along with other nearby Manhattan BIDs, surprised NYC Department of Sanitation workers at Garage 2, who have been working tirelessly to keep our districts clean, with lunch. In the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Initiative recognizes and appreciates all the undertakings of our essential workers—particularly those in waste management who are ensuring our streets remain clean, safe, and attractive even if public life has come to a pause. Though a small effort, the is committed to pursuing many more in order to give thanks to these integral parts of both BID and City operations, and the people who are putting themselves on the line in these uncertain times.
In partnership with the New York Department of Sanitation, individual districts are reliant on their respective sanitation crews. On average, upwards of 40,000 bags of garbage are removed in districts like SoHo Broadway, over 51,000 in Meatpacking, 63,000 in NoHo and 91,000 as part of the Village Alliance. Inspired by their continued efforts, this program was created as a “thank you” to the crews ensuring New York City’s streets remain clean during these unprecedented times. Together, the BIDs’ goal is to express their gratitude for workers’ services as they are integral to the maintenance of each community and local businesses and members located within.”
The BIDs purchased a variety of offerings from the following food and beverage destinations:
In addition, the Initiative gives a special thanks to the Million Lives COVID-19 Global Support Fund and VillageOne for providing protective masks!
Approximately 76 workers will benefit from the initial efforts of the Garage 2 program with hopes to expand the efforts further and inspire other neighborhoods to partake.
