Hlynur V. Atlason, Managing Partner, ATLASON – “Designing in SoHo” – Icelandic-born, New York-based designer Hlynur V. Atlason leads his eponymous design studio ATLASON, based in Manhattan. He heads a team of world-class strategists, innovators and designers, practicing a method of design deeply informed by research, brand and craft. ATLASON delivers strategy, design innovation and manufacturing expertise, guaranteeing everything imagined can be made. Hlynur and his team have worked for some of the biggest and most respected global brands in multiple categories, from fragrance to furniture. Atlason studied product design at Parsons School of Design in New York. He is currently an adjunct lecturer at the School of Visual Arts in New York, in the Products of Design Master’s Degree Program.
David Briggs, AIA, LEED AP, Principal, Loci Architecture – “Four Decades in SoHo” – David Briggs arrived in NYC in the early 1980s as a college intern. He shopped in SoHo for inexpensive clothing, futons, and kitchen supplies at places like the Canal Jean Company and Broadway Panhandler (he doesn’t remember the name of the futon place, but it was downstairs from Jeff Koons’ studio and around the corner from Keith Haring’s Pop Shop). One of his first jobs as a young architect in the late 80s was on the 7th Floor of the Singer Manufacturing Building. The staff’s watering holes, Fanelli’s and the Prince Street Bar, could be seen from the office’s cast iron balcony where Dave parked his bicycle before sitting down with an early version of AutoCAD and designing recording studios. After he founded LOCI in the late ‘90s, he rented a space at 224 Centre Street, just east of the historic district. Five years later he moved into 594 Broadway and has been there ever since designing schools, homes, offices, and building restorations. A lot of things have changed in SoHo since 1983, but it is still one of the greatest neighborhoods in the greatest city in the world and Dave is grateful to be part of its living history.
Harry Bubbins, East Village and Special Projects Director, Village Preservation – “What is That Sticking Out? Fire Fighting Remnants in SoHo” – Harry Bubbins is the East Village & Special Projects Director at Village Preservation. A born New Yorker, Harry has a degree in Urban & Regional Studies from Cornell University and taught at the public junior high school in the Bronx he attended. Among his many honors, Harry received a Certificate of Recognition for the Municipal Art Society’s Community Planner Award, and has also received the Annual Environmental Justice Award from the Professional Staff Congress of CUNY.
Alyssa Bueno, Analyst, Carbon Credit Capital – “Fighting Climate Change in SoHo Broadway” – Alyssa graduated from Skidmore College in 2018 as an Environmental Studies major. Since then, Alyssa has been working at Carbon Credit Capital as a member of the business development team and is primarily responsible for identifying new opportunities for company advancement. She reviews the performance of each of CCC’s pipeline strategies that include outreach, networking, paneling, and garnering the member base. By analyzing current market insights, Alyssa helps enhance and streamline CCC’s strategies. She is also a member of CCC’s social media team where she works to highlight company news and engage in the global discussion.
Rebecca Kelly, Artistic Director, Rebecca Kelly Ballet – “Transforming Ideas Into Movement” – Rebecca Kelly grew up in London, Khartoum, Sudan, and Washington, DC. She trained at the School of Washington Ballet and holds a BA from Bryn Mawr College. In 1979 Ms. Kelly co-founded her company with husband and dance partner Craig Brashear. With a repertory of over 80 modern and ballet works, Kelly’s choreography has been commissioned by the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, The Carlisle Project, Ballet Pacifica, Festival of the Lakes, and Boston Ballet II. Kelly also choreographs for fashion, television, and youth projects. After the early decades of international and national touring, in addition to the ongoing creation of new ballets, Rebecca and Craig continue to devote their energies to working in the area of dance education, developing Onstage, Kids Co-Motion, and the Tahawus Cultural Center in upstate with the goal to kindle and nurture the drive toward excellence.
Lance Marsh, Clean Team Supervisor, ACE Programs for the Homeless – “A Sweeping Change” – SoHo Broadway’s Clean Team is provided through a contract with ACE Programs for the Homeless and is supervised by Lance Marsh. The Clean Team works from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. 363 days per year sweeping the sidewalks, emptying trash receptacles, removing graffiti, removing snow/ice from crosswalks and generally making Broadway look its best. Originally from Toronto, Lance moved to New York when at age 7 and currently lives on Staten Island. In his spare time, he enjoys working on his car, graphic arts, gaming/e-sports, and exploring the city.
