World AIDS Day 2018 at Bookstore Cafe-Soho Community Events 

For World AIDS Day 2018, Housing Works Bookstore Cafe will host a series of short HIV/AIDS-related workshops during the afternoon of December 1.

Participants will be invited to engage with workshop leaders to learn about the history of AIDs-specific activism, cultivate their own responses to the crisis, and engage in creative endeavors connected to the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.

Throughout the day, we are proud to screen ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS.

ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS is the 29th iteration of Visual AIDS’ longstanding Day With(out) Art project. Highlighting the impact of art in contemporary AIDS activism and advocacy, the program features new short videos from six inspiring community organizations and collectives—ACT UP NY, Positive Women’s Network, Sero Project, The SPOT, Tacoma Action Collective, and VOCAL NY.

ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGS seeks to reflect the persisting urgencies of today’s HIV/AIDS epidemic, including HIV criminalization, Big Pharma, homelessness, and the disproportionate effects of HIV on marginalized communities. At a moment of growing interest in the histories of AIDS activism, ALTERNATE ENDINGS, ACTIVIST RISINGSforegrounds contemporary engagements between activists, artists, and cultural workers on the front lines.

STENCIL REVOLUTION: T-Shirt and Poster Stencil Workshop

Using a range of stencils, you can create a t-shirt or poster that communicates a message combining art and activism and take it home with you. Great as a World AIDS Day keepsake or holiday gift. All materials provided.

PUTTING THE TEST TO THE TEST: Communicating Results and Risk

Join a teach-in on HIV criminalization and then participate in the development of a printed resource so people getting an HIV test will be more aware of what a positive result may mean for them related to local laws and best practices.

WISH YOU WERE HERE with the Sero Project and Black & Pink

At this event we will write holiday greeting cards to folks who are incarcerated due to laws that criminalize people living with HIV. All materials provided.

Sero is a network of people with HIV and allies fighting for freedom from stigma and injustice. Sero is particularly focused on ending inappropriate criminal prosecutions of people with HIV, including for non-disclosure of their HIV status, potential or perceived HIV exposure or HIV transmission.

Black & Pink is an open family of LGBTQ prisoners and “free world” allies who support each other. Our work toward the abolition of the prison industrial complex is rooted in the experience of currently and formerly incarcerated people. We are outraged by the specific violence of the prison industrial complex against LGBTQ people, and respond through advocacy, education, direct service, and organizing.

DRAW YOUR STORY: Making Comics with James Romberger and Marguerite Van Cook

What does your day look like? How does it feel? What colors do you see in your day? Join legendary artist James Romberger and Marguerite Van Cook for an interactive workshop where they will lead you through a process of paneling, drawing and coloring out a moment in your day. This workshop was originally part of the NYPL and Visual AIDS series WHY WE FIGHT: Remembering AIDS Activism.

James Romberger (born 1958) is an American fine artist and cartoonist known for his depictions of New York City’s Lower East Side. His solo and collaborative exhibitions have appeared at the Grace Borgenicht Gallery, Gracie Mansion, The Proposition and the New Museum of Contemporary Art. Romberger contributed work in the comics medium to alternative publications such as World War 3 Illustrated. Ground Zero, his science-fiction strip collaboration with his wife, filmmaker Marguerite Van Cook, was serialized through the 1980s and 1990s in various downtown literary magazines.

Marguerite Van Cook (née Martin) is an artist, writer, musician/singer and filmmaker. She was born in England and now resides in New York in the Lower East Side/East Village. She attended Portsmouth College of Art and Design, Northumbria University Graphic and Fine Arts programs, BMCC, and Columbia University for English (B.A.) and Modern European Studies (M.A.). She currently attends the CUNY Graduate Center in the French Ph.D. program.
