By The Museum at Eldridge Street
Many of Broadway’s Jewish composers, lyricists, and actors can trace their roots from Eastern Europe and Russia through the Lower East Side’s Yiddish theare heyday to today’s Great White Way. We are hnored to pay tribute to “Jewish Broadway” and to honor two of Broadway’s legends – Sheldon Harnick and Stephen Schwartz at this year’s gala. We are thrilled to also honor Michael Weinstein, Chairman of the Museum’s Board of Directors, on the occasion of his 75th birthday.
The Museum at Eldridge Street – housed in the National Historic Landmark 1887 Eldridge Street Synagogue – celebrates Jewish American culture and history, shares the many stories of Lower East Side immigrations, and offers programs that explore the architectural preservation of our landmark synagogue. The Museum raised $20 million and devoted more than 20 years to restoring this historically significant synagogue and today it brings to life the history of the immigrants who built it. Our gala is crucial to continuing the long legacy of this neighborhood landmark.
