Ragged Sky Press presents the launch of Go Deep, a book of poetry and pastels, with a reading and musical performance.
POETS: Newly diagnosed with multiple myeloma, Steve Nolan called every person in the country rumored to have the same form of cancer. He was misinformed about NJ DeVico’s leukemia; she had myelodysplastic syndrome. The initial phone call revealed his love of poetry and her love of art. A collaboration—and friendship—was born. Nolan has been writing poetry for 40 years, has spent time in Afghanistan, and as a social worker in the US Army and Air Force. DeVico fell in love with Crayola crayons 56 years ago, but has since moved up to oil pastels.
MUSICIANS: Marion Beckenstein (vocal, autoharp, keyboard) has sung extensively with Steve Reich and Musicians, the Philip Glass Ensemble, Music Before 1800 and the Long Island Baroque Ensemble, among others. She has been described by The New York Times as “pure and unflinching” – that is, her voice has. Bryan Brown (vocal, guitar, keyboard) plays in the post-Nuggetist Shanghai Love Motel of New York City as well as sundry other pre-, post-, and non-Nuggetist ensembles. He has been described as “flinching, but subtle about it.” The pair come by their repertoire via Appalachia, Hibernia, NYC, Saskatchewan, and too many other places to mention. Both reside near the top of the Manhattan Island.
