First Friday: First Friday: Sage and Coombe of Tribeca NYC

By The Architectural League and the Urban Design Forum

The League’s First Friday events are informal social gatherings that allow members to visit the offices of leading design practices and see work on the boards.

Sage and Coombe Architects is a New York City design firm focused on social infrastructure. Recognized widely for both design excellence and civic leadership, Sage and Coombe partners with a range of clients that span government agencies, cultural institutions, service providers, and community organizations to realize a diverse portfolio of projects that serve the public realm: from parks and train stations to phone booths to libraries and museums. Founded in 1994 by its namesake partners Jennifer Sage and Peter Coombe, the firm is based in Tribeca.

Completed projects include:

Live Oak Bank Pavilion This outdoor stage and music venue, operated by Live Nation, serves an audience of 7,000 as part of a new 6.6 acre public waterfront park in Wilmington, NC, designed with landscape architect Hargreaves Jones.

Rockaway Beach Open-Up Sage and Coombe worked with the city of New York to redesign a stretch of the Rockaway Beach boardwalk following extensive damage from Hurricane Sandy, creating a set of raised platforms with outdoor showers, shade, and access to concession facilities.

Conference House Park Pavilion This 4,500 square foot pavilion on the Staten Island waterfront features salvaged piles from the deteriorated former structure and an elevated deck to ensure both flood resiliency and an accessible view of the park’s waterfront.

Current and upcoming projects include:

Mulberry Commons Incorporating stormwater management and local materials, this multiphase park development connects Newark Penn Station and the Prudential Center Arena, and will include a new pedestrian bridge over the Penn Station rail tracks.

Maplewood Library Adjacent to the Olmsted-designed Memorial Park, this design for a public library features two new event spaces, separated nighttime operations, new reading rooms, and a local history room.

Hudson River Estuarium This planned research and education center on Pier 26 will complete the Tribeca section of Hudson River Park and focus on the aquatic culture of the Hudson River estuary.
