Are you interested in improving the safety and functionality of Canal Street, the SoHo Broadway District’s southern gateway?
On March 7, the New York City Department of Transportation hosted a workshop focusing on pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicle improvements on Canal Street from the West Side Highway to the Manhattan Bridge. Over 130 community members attended the 2-hour workshop. DOT gave a brief presentation on planning history and current conditions in the corridor and then moved into small group breakout rooms to gather feedback from participants on suggested improvements, which were then reported back to the larger group. The most common themes raised called for more space for pedestrians, safer intersections (including design and signal changes), improved enforcement, and bike infrastructure. DOT will continue outreach Spring of 2022 through in-person engagement in the Canal corridor as well as gathering feedback via an online portal. A design proposal is anticipated to be presented by 2024 based on feedback received during this process.
We encourage members of the SoHo Broadway community to submit their comments, thoughts and concerns regarding pedestrian safety and functionality of Canal Street on the DOT Canal Street feedback portal map which can be accessed here!
