Thank You for helping us celebrate the opening of the SoHo Broadway Business Improvement District

The SoHo Broadway community came together on Wednesday January 28th to celebrate the opening of the SoHo Broadway Business Improvement District. Residents, property owners, commercial tenants and other interested attendees mingled with elected and government officials where they learned about the BID’s services and plans to improve Broadway.

Brian Steinwurtzel (President) and Emily Hellstrom (Vice President) welcomed approximately 100 guests to the Open House that was held at Scholastic. The program included remarks from Council Member Margaret Chin and Community Board 2 Chairperson Tobi Bergman. In reflecting on the lengthy approval process, Council Member Chin highlighted the importance of giving residential property owners and tenants an expanded voice within the SoHo Broadway BID.

The BID’s Executive Director, Mark Dicus, reported on the BID’s recent activities including the launch of its Supplemental Sanitation services in November.  The Executive Director’s report highlighted the BID’s community outreach efforts through meetings with SoHo Broadway community members, the BID’s Winter 2015 Community Survey and meetings with several City Agencies (NYPD (1st and 5th Precinct), DSNY, DEP, etc.). Mr. Dicus also shared the BID’s near term plans which include the development of a sidewalk management program to improve the pedestrian experience along SoHo’s Broadway.  The BID is also preparing for an upcoming membership registration drive to register members who will elect the BID’s permanent board of directors at the Annual Meeting tentatively planned for June 2015.

Corinne Colen (Outreach and Communications Committee) also announced that the BID recently retained the award-winning branding design firm mucca to develop the BID’s visual identity. Mucca is located within the BID and is best known for developing the iconic branding behind Balthazar Restaurant, Pastis, Schiller’s and Brooklyn Fare. The firm, through its founders Matteo Bologna and Roberta Ronsivalle continue to focus on creating smart and beautiful brands that stand the test of time. The BID is excited to work with such a highly regarded branding and design firm located so close to home.

The program concluded with the BID’s first Recognition Award being presented to Barbara Cohen for her four years of effort and determination that lead to the approval and formation of the SoHo Broadway BID.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend and the BID is looking forward to an exciting 2015!
